Wild, Unruly Lion's Mane!!

Shaving my head when I was in chemo was something I decided to do so I would not have to watch my hair fall out...it kinda made it feel like it was my choice when my hair was going to go away and that I was not a captive to the whims of cancer and treatment. It was all about having some sense of POWER and CONTROL when I went to shave my head. I was thinking, "The cancer ain't gonna take my hair...I will shave it!" LOL, that was one of my thoughts to help me cope...we all have to deal with it in our own way, eh. I did not really think twice about it.

But now!! It is a WHOLE other story!!. My hair is growing in CURLY and full of BODY (aka POOFY)! LOL! It is a bit hard to get used to that. Those who knew me pre-treatment knew my hair to be stick straight, fine, and long. Now....I like to refer to my hair as an unruly lion's mane! LOL! Every other day is an awkward hair day...I am getting much better at not comparing my current hair to my pre-chemo hair though. In general, I am learning not to compare my current self to how I was pre-treatment --> very important!!

Anywho, I was just wondering if any ladies who may read this struggled with the way their hair grew in? I find it is my biggest insecurity at the moment and I wear this insecurity on my sleeve!! Any tips on how you all dealt with a different colour, style, texture, and length of your hair growing back? Any GIRL POWER tips (hey, the Spice Girls are reunited and touring!...gotta have some girl power!!!)?? :+)

I know this seems like such a petty and superficial thing in the grand scheme of things...and that does cross my mind and I think that is a valid statement...but it is what it is...I am doing my best!! :+)

Just e-mail me or leave a comment! Thanks!

Here is a recent pic of my wild and unruly lion's mane!

Hugs,
Liz

ps - WillToWin....I get the "did you perm your hair?" too!! LOL! So funny!! I am also told that if I dye my hair red I could play the part of little Orphan Annie! LOL...too funny! :+)

WillToWin here liz, and you are not goofy for thinking what you are thinking.

First, your hair is beautiful, but I know exactly what you are talking about. I had very wavy, but controllable, thick hair. I also shaved my head to lessen the trauma and then spent a year and a half, bald.

When my hair started growing in, I thought, "I can get back to normal now...I'll look like the old me." WRONG.. It came in very very tight curly, awful. I couldn't blow dry it. Even in the shower it stayed curly. So I just let it go.

Now, after a year of hair cuts it is still much curlier (but thankfully much more manageable) than it was. I can almost blow dry instead of going in to work with it wet and let it curl up all day!!!

But I still don't look like me. Oh I have glimpses of me now and then, but after spending a year in treatment dealing with a completely different face, look, body, I thought it would just come back. It is disappointing, but you get used to it (people keep asking me where I got my hair permed, like I did this on purpose!!!).

Your hair does start to come back though (it does take about a year or so to get your texture back). You don't think of how much you "trained" your hair to go a certain way as a child...and now, you are a child again.

Enjoy the new look...there's not much you can do about it. Remember, there are those of us who know exactly how you feel. And, relax, you are beautiful!!!

WillToWin again...forgot to tell you. When your hair grows a few more inches, invest in a flat iron hair care product to straighten it. I think it's a little too short to do it right now, but a month or so. The flat iron works like a curling iron, but straightens the hair. (Funny you should now have to work with your hair to get a look that used to come naturally!!). The flat iron works and you can see more of the old you coming out!!! A good one will cost about $20 USD.

I like my new curly hair, although some days it is super frizzy and that's not something I'm crazy about.

I decided not to cut my hair (not one cut in the year since it started to regrow) and so it is quite unruly. My key to sanity is the HEADBAND -- just push it off my face, let it be as curly as it wants to be, and off I go.
